SPIRAL DYNAMICS: Mastering Values, Leadership and Change
Authors Don Edward Beck & Christopher C. Cowan, Blackwell 1996
Spiral Dynamics reveals the hidden codes that shape human nature, create global diversities, and drive evolutionary change. These magnetic forces attract and repel individuals, form the webs that connect people within organisations, and forge the rise and fall of nations and cultures. This book tracks our historic emergence from clans to tribes to networks and holograms; identifies seven Variations on Change, and adds power and precision to the design of human systems and 21st Century leadership.
Spiral Dynamics is an extension and elaboration of the biopsychosocial systems concept of the late Clare W. Graves; work that Canada's Maclean's magazine called "The Theory that Explains Everything". The authors mesh UK biologist Richard Dawkins' concept of "memes" with Graves "Value Systems" in crafting a unique transformational change formula and process. Their concept of vMemes represents the first major statement of the new "Science of Memetics".
Don Beck and Chris Cowan, who were closely associated with Clare W. Graves, apply the principles of Spiral Dynamics worldwide in both corporate and top-level government sectors. A major part of their work has been carried out over the last twenty years in South Africa where they helped transform and design organisational and marketing systems for a wide range of companies, revitalise local communities, educational and professional institutions and sports programs. Beck also designed a "Hearts & Minds" strategy for the Springbok World Cup winning rugby union team in 1995.
Beck and Cowan were on the faculty of the University of North Texas for a number of years before forming the National Values Centre. More recently Don Beck has formed the Institute for Values & Culture.

A Theory of Everything: An Integral Vision for Business, Politics, Science & Spirituality
This is a concise comprehensive overview of Ken Wilber's revolutionary thought and its application in today's world. In clear, non-technical language, Wilber presents leading edge models that integrate the realms of body, mind, soul and spirit. Wilber then demonstrates how these theories can be applied to real-world problems in the fields of business, politics, medicine and education. He also presents daily practices that readers can take up in order to apply this integrative vision to their own, everyday lives.
Topics include:
- A leading model of human evolution called "spiral dynamics"
- Wilber's ground breaking "all quadrant, all level" approach for integrating the realms of science and religion.
- Maps of the Kosmos that bring together the most influential worldviews that have developed throughout the ages
- A discussion of "integrative transformative practices" that combines meditation and sophisticated psychological techniques to help readers develop this integral vision in their own lives
Ken Wilber is among the most widely read and influential American philosophers of our time, credited with creating a genuine world philosophy. The eight volumes of his recently published Collected Works include seventeen of his books as well as essays and other writings.
Quotes:
"To my mind Ken Wilber is the most sublime thinker since Plato and provides all of us with a vision of life and the cosmos which inseparably fuses spirit into the matrix of everything we say and do. Reading Ken Wilber is a must, and A Theory of Everything is the place to begin."
Jim Garrison, President, State of the World Forum
"Written with astonishing lucidity about human development and spirituality. A Theory of Everything makes plain how these abstract and complicated ideas can be integrated into our everyday lives."
Warren Bennis, Professor, University of Southern California and author of On Becoming a Leader

Uhuru and Renaissance: South Africa in a New Century
Author: Graham Linscott Tekweni Press, Durban November, 2001
Graham Linscott co-authored "The Crucible" with Don Beck in 1991 which looked at South Africa at that time and outlined solutions for the resolution of global concerns of First versus Third World, north versus south, rich versus poor, white versus black.
Uhuru and Renaissance updates the South African situation from "The Crucible" to the present time while also looking at global issues using the "Values System" framework. This is a practical application of the Graves / Beck technology and outlines steps that can be used in addressing a number of the key issues facing leaders in the 21st Century. It is a natural follow on read to both "The Crucible" as well as "Spiral Dynamics" in terms of the practical application of the Values technology.
Uhuru and Renaissance is a book about Africa. It focuses on solutions to the challenges facing South Africa which, applied to the continent as a whole, offer an escape from the chaos which otherwise threatens to engulf it. In the process, the book sheds light on global disparities in material wealth and privilege, which closely follow the same racial contours as in South Africa.
Graham Linscott argues compellingly that 21st Century solutions are likely to be found not in racial stereotypes inherited from the past, but by understanding the Value Systems that have been created by broad streams of interacting humanity. In this respect South Africa is like a crossroads of history.
This book provides fresh insights to South Africa, the continent of Africa and a world where (as in Afghanistan and the Middle East) the wealthy, developed nations are painfully adjusting to the demands of marginalized and angry under-developed nations. It makes a significant contribution in all three areas.
The writer is one of South Africa's most seasoned political commentators. His 36 years in journalism have taken him to 11 African countries, which included coverage of the revolutionary wars in Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and a lengthy spell in the Press Gallery of the South African Parliament.
